Two-step growth mixture model to examine heterogeneity in nonlinear trajectories

چکیده

Empirical researchers are usually interested in investigating the impacts that baseline covariates have when uncovering sample heterogeneity and separating samples into more homogeneous groups. However, a considerable number of studies structural equation modeling (SEM) framework start with vague hypotheses terms possible causes. It suggests (1) determination specification proper model is not straightforward, (2) exploration process may be computationally intensive given SEM complicated pool candidate huge psychological educational domain where widely employed. Following Bakk Kuha (2017), this article presents two-step growth mixture (GMM) examines relationship between latent classes nonlinear trajectories characteristics. Our simulation demonstrate proposed capable clustering change patterns, estimating parameters interest unbiasedly, precisely, as well exhibiting appropriate confidence interval coverage. Considering highly correlated, study also proposes implementing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to reduce dimension covariate space. We illustrate how use hybrid method, GMM EFA, efficiently explore longitudinal mathematics achievement data.

Explaining Heterogeneity in Risk Preferences Using a Finite Mixture Model

This paper studies the effect of the space (distance) between lotteries' outcomes on risk-taking behavior and the shape of estimated utility and probability weighting functions. Previously investigated experimental data shows a significant space effect in the gain domain. As compared to low spaced lotteries, high spaced lotteries are associated with higher risk aversion for high probabilities o...

Latent Growth Mixture Models to estimate PTSD trajectories

S tatistical models to estimate individual change over time and to investigate the existence of latent trajectories, where individuals belong to trajectories that are unobserved (latent), are becoming ever more popular. Such models are called Latent Growth Mixture Models (LGMM; Muthén & Muthén, 2000) and are often applied to estimate posttraumatic stress (PTSD) trajectories across several month...

Differential Growth Trajectories for Achievement Among Children Retained in First Grade: A Growth Mixture Model.

The authors investigated the differential effect of retention on the development of academic achievement from grade one to five on children retained in first grade over six years. Growth Mixture Model (GMM) analyses supported the existence of two distinct trajectory groups of retained children for both reading and math among 125 ethnically and linguistically diverse retained children. For each ...

A two-component Bayesian mixture model to identify implausible gestational age

Background: Birth weight and gestational age are two important variables in obstetric research. The primary measure of gestational age is based on a mother’s recall of her last menstrual period. This recall may cause random or systematic errors. Therefore, the objective of this study is to utilize Bayesian mixture model in order to identify implausible gestational age.   Methods: ...
